Celebrating Sandwiches

by Anne Middleton, on October 30th, 2015

Are you stunned that it the year is 75% completed?  No worries.  There is good news….

All hail National Sandwich Day!  This holiday is something every healthy American consumer of food craves! And who wouldn’t want to join the festivities of this mouth-watering and most creative celebration occurring annually on November 3rd? Whether you are a hearty carnivore, prefer vegan options or crave gluten-free bread, everyone can revel in the joy of this occasion.

Foodie historians attribute the creation of the sandwich as we know it today to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.

As the tale has been imparted for hundreds of years, this Englishman was said to have been fond of gambling. So in 1762, during a 24 hour streak of wagering, the Earl of Sandwich determined he could not be interrupted to consume any grub. Yet his stamina was wavering.

The resourceful Earl directed the cook to prepare his nourishment in such a way that it would not interfere with his game and would allow his hands to be free for continued betting. The kitchen staff presented him with sliced meat between two pieces of toast. Perfect! This meal required no utensils and could be eaten with one hand, leaving the other free to continue the competition.

Nowadays, it would be virtually inconceivable to imagine a world without sandwiches. How would sliced turkey be properly consumed?  What would we do with our melted cheese? What would school children bargain with for lunch?

For professional and home cooks, there exists immense pressure to dish up the optimal sandwich.  To avoid failure and embarrassment, the internet food channels and even You Tube are utilized to master the art of sandwich construction.

The process begins with the concept of constructing a culinary masterpiece.  You are limited only by your imagination.  And if you lack imagination, the world wide web supplies a multitude of informative lessons to decipher the pinnacle method for producing a culinary delicacy.

Just make sure you have a reliable tablet or Smartphone and a clear network connection.  Otherwise, your sandwich may become a catastrophe that will persist in your memory for a lifetime.

• Condiments need not be restricted to mustard or mayo.  Consider hollandaise, Nutella or a pesto spread.
• Expand your horizons when applying cheese to your bread-filled snack. Stop unwrapping the plastic around that slice of American cheese.  Embrace the adventure with brie, Gouda or Muenster.
• Warm it up!  Recognize that the masterpiece you are crafting can be served either hot or cold
