Young Cyber Heroes

by Anne Middleton, on April 7th, 2015

Fear grips the nation as we observe the evil invading our world of technology.  We may not be able to stare these cyber criminals in the eye, but we are cognizant that their lawless and downright scandalous behavior puts all of us in danger.

Where can we turn when these internet villains engage in sneaky behavior to penetrate our personal information and steal our identity?

Cyber Patriot to the rescue! The youth of our world are now being trained to protect us.

CyberPatriot is the cool title for a unique group of young Americans.  The Air Force Association actually (AFA) conceived of this concept. The mission is to inspire high school students toward careers in cybersecurity, an essential discipline that is critical to our nation's future and web safety.

The concept is pretty basic, and brilliant. The CyberPatriot program is intended to:
• Engage students in learning about careers in cybersecurity
• Help students understand the importance of defending the internet from harmful intruders
• Introduce students to cybersecurity principles

At the center of CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. Yes, this is America, so of course, we must compete.

Throughout this competition of brainiacs, these future corporate executives are tasked with uncovering deeply hidden cybersecurity vulnerabilities while maintaining the integrity of the technology system.  Winners warrant national recognition (bragging rights) and scholarship money.

And more relevant to the forthcoming search for jobs, these youthful geniuses get hands-on experience.  They also procure an amazing list of skills and capabilities for their resume in an arena that reads like a foreign language to most of us. (Binary, COM Mode, GC…most of us could never fathom the definition of these terms that are so familiar to hackers).

These shrewd and canny entrepreneurs in training who are part of the CyberPatriot team earn credentials that will light up their resume.  Corporations will be scrambling to hire these brilliant young minds and their resumes will surely rise to the summit of the interview process.

When these students apply for a job on Monster.com they will be in such high demand that they will have their preference of high level employment throughout the world.

Who knew that a cybersecurity contest for kids would be the training ground for future security gurus? Monster.com advocates internships and it is crystal clear that pertinent time in the job sector you select can lead to big rewards.
