When summer comes to mind, we focus on the joy of the warm weather, the trips to the beach, lounging outdoors and sharing evening bar-b-ques. But hot weather has an uncomfortable side, too. The scorching, oppressive heat can sometimes make getting through the day in comfort nearly impossible.  But there are solutions to the sweating out the day in the summer.  Consider a trip to your local shopping mall or enjoying a popular summer film at an air conditioned movie theater or even try a home remedy to keeping cool in sizzling summer season.

DIY Air Conditioning

Do you find it impossible to sleep in the humidity or heat?  Try creating your own room air conditioner. Freeze a couple of water bottles. When it’s time for bed, place them in front of a floor or desk fan and you'll enjoy a much cooler breeze with this makeshift air-conditioner. You can also use a huge bowl of ice water in front of the fan.

Sleep in Comfort

Chill your bed by folding sheets and pillowcases, placing them in plastic bags, and sticking them in the freezer for a few hours. Then make up the bed just before you go to sleep for sweet (and cool) dreams.

Movie Theater Refuge

When it feels as though it is 90 degrees in the shade with equal humidity, opt to look for fun indoors. Since so many blockbuster films are released during the summer months, going to the movies is the perfect summer activity.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, in 1925, Willis Carrier convinced Paramount Pictures that movie ticket sales would increase if the studio were to install his cooling invention in their movie theaters.  Paramount took a chance and was rewarded when thousands of curious patrons lined up to experience the "cool comfort" awaiting them inside the movie theater.

And so began the world's first movie air conditioning system that would bring relief to the masses by cooling off the movie theater. Mr. Carrier basically transformed the summer months, which were previously a box-office wasteland, into Hollywood's most profitable season.

Movie fans have this refrigeration-type innovation to thank for the release of endless mega-movies and blockbusters that today are released during summertime.

Matinees at your neighborhood movie theater are a perfect solution to dealing with those sweltering summer days.  A movie theater is cool and comfy environment and the tickets during the day are less expensive. It is a great way to get out of the summer heat.

The Shopping Mall

There are another three simple words to help relieve the oppressive summer heat – The Shopping Mall! Shopping malls are air conditioned islands of coolness and can help you pass the time on hot days.

The shopping mall with its air-conditioned building has pretty much everything you could ever ask for…it is like a city itself.  There are shops, food courts, movies, restaurants and a whole bunch of things you can enjoy.

An average-sized mall requires at least two hours just to window shop and maybe grab a bite or a cool drink. Some malls also have indoor playgrounds and arcades for kids, offering a nice alternative to playing outdoors. A few malls even allow four-legged friends to roam the shopping area, allowing the entire family to enjoy a day in a cool environment.

Cultural Options

Museums and libraries always have an air conditioning system and many are free, which makes them ideal places to spend a hot, lazy afternoon. Just remember, that even if you are in an air conditioned area, you still must stay hydrated.  Drink plenty of liquids, especially water.

Relief

So when you feel you are melting this summer, consider catching a summer movie at your local theater. Even better, find a movie theater near or in an air conditioned shopping mall and spend the entire day in cool comfort.
